We originally met when we were both playing soccer in the Lake Placid PeeWee program when we were in sixth grade. Neither one of us really remembers this, but there is photo (and diary entry) evidence…..

We had a lot of mutual friends growing up, but never really overlapped again until the summer of 2010, when Katelin Roy Delahanty reintroduced us by bringing JP out to Caroline’s family camp on Lake Placid. Katelin and JP attended the Northwood School together, and Katelin and Caroline had known each other from growing up on the lake (Katelin will be reciprocating bridesmaid duties this summer after Caroline was in her 2013 wedding!).

JP was bartending at a golf course and Caroline was waitressing and searching for jobs after graduating from NYU that spring. While we both worked our seasonal gigs, we spent a lot of time hanging out on the lake and in town after our respective shifts. Over the course of the next year, our friendship grew into something more despite the fact that Caroline moved to the Boston area to work at the Tremont School. She had known that JP was a coach for NYSEF (New York Ski Educational Foundation), but she had no idea that he was a freestyle skier until she followed him through the terrain park one day! For the next two years, we spent a lot of time on the phone and drove back and forth from Boston to Lake Placid frequently to visit each other.

Caroline moved to Lake Placid full time in 2012, finding a teaching job in town. We moved in together for two years before she headed to a year-long masters’ program at the University of Vermont. She returned to Lake Placid at the end of the program to teach at North Country School, and we moved into a cabin outside of town.
